Sms Seydlitz was a battlecruiser of the Imperial German Navy during World War I. She was part of the Seydlitz-class, which consisted of four battlecruisers. The ship was named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz, a Prussian general during the 18th century.
Sms Seydlitz was launched in 1912 and commissioned into the German Navy in May 1913. She had a top speed of 26 knots and was armed with a main battery of ten 28 cm guns. The ship participated in several major naval battles, including the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
During the Battle of Jutland, Sms Seydlitz was heavily damaged by a British shell that hit her magazine, causing a massive explosion. Despite the damage, the crew managed to save the ship and prevent her from sinking. After extensive repairs, she returned to service and continued to serve until the end of the war.
After World War I, Sms Seydlitz was interned in Scapa Flow along with the rest of the German High Seas Fleet. In 1919, the German commander scuttled the fleet to prevent it from falling into British hands. Sms Seydlitz sank, but was later raised and scrapped in the 1920s.
Today, Sms Seydlitz is remembered as one of the most prominent and powerful German battlecruisers of World War I.
